New Study Reveals Cheapest Months to Visit Every Country

3 weeks ago 5

For savvy travelers looking to save big on accommodation costs, timing is everything. A recent study by Go2Africa analyzed millions of hotel prices worldwide to determine the cheapest and most expensive months to travel to various destinations. The company then created an online tool, which allows users to view each country on the world map according to month to see how prices compare.

The research findings and resulting tool reveal that booking travel during the proper month can lead to savings of up to 83 percent, or up to $991, on average hotel rates, while choosing the most expensive month could mean paying as much as 335 percent of the average price.

When to Travel for the Best Deals

According to the study, November is the cheapest month to visit most destinations, with 25 countries—such as Norway, Sweden, France, the United States and Singapore—experiencing the lowest hotel prices during this time. On average, November sees a 3.51 percent decrease in room rates.

Meanwhile, June records the most significant overall price drop, averaging a 3.88% decrease in hotel costs across various destinations, including Sri Lanka, South Africa and Hong Kong. As June precedes the peak summer travel season, travelers can take advantage of significant discounts before prices surge in July and August.

Conversely, December ranks as the most expensive month to travel, with hotel rates spiking in 38 countries, including Australia, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. On average, hotel prices in December are 9.52 percent higher, likely due to holiday travel and festive celebrations driving prime demand.

Why Prices Fluctuate

Accommodation rates fluctuate based on a variety of factors, including seasonal demand, weather patterns and cultural events, such as festivals and holidays.

  • Festivals and Holidays: Countries that host major events often see a surge in hotel prices. For example, India’s Holi festival in March corresponds with a 12.95 percent increase in hotel rates. Likewise, Brazil’s December hotel prices soar by 59.7 percent due to its status as a prime New Year’s Eve destination.
  • High Season in Safari Destinations: In countries like Tanzania, where the dry season from June to October offers the best wildlife viewing, hotel prices peak in August, rising by 55.63 percent. Similarly, Kenya experiences a 45.36 percent price surge in July, whereas November sees average prices decrease by 32.58 percent and 25.15 percent in May.
  • Summer Travel in Europe: Popular European destinations experience sharp price increases during summer’s peak travel months, when kids are off school and people travel most. Italy’s hotel rates rise by 58.25 percent in July, while Croatia sees a 47.78 percent premium in July and 42.53 percent in August.
  • Christmas and Winter Getaways: December travel sees steep price hikes in destinations known for winter attractions. Austria, famous for its Christmas markets and ski resorts, experiences a staggering 198 percent increase in hotel prices during the festive season. The United States also sees a 15.31 percent rise in hotel costs as travelers visit family or take winter vacations.
