Lyft Silver Launches to Empower Older Adults with Safer, Simpler Rides

Lyft is taking a meaningful step toward helping older adults stay mobile and connected with the launch of Lyft Silver, a new feature rolling out nationwide with early access starting May 5. Tailored specifically to meet the needs of aging riders, the new service simplifies the ride-hailing experience and offers added peace of mind for both riders and their loved ones.

Recognizing how difficult it can be for families to discuss giving up the car keys with their aging loved ones, Lyft Silver aims to promote a way for seniors to preserve their independence. The service emphasizes comfort, simplicity and support—qualities the company says are essential for empowering older riders.

“We poured our hearts into designing this, thinking about those we cherish most,” the company stated in its announcement. Lyft Silver is “not just a new version of Lyft, but a thoughtful way to give your older mother, father, or friend the gift of independence, without the weight of worry.”

Key features of Lyft Silver include:

  • Live phone support with real human agents, offering reassurance and assistance when needed.
  • A streamlined app interface, highlighting only the essentials for booking a ride.
  • Vehicle prioritization that favors cars easier to enter and exit, enhancing physical comfort.
• Trip sharing options that allow family and caregivers to track rides and receive updates when their loved one arrives at a destination.

The program was developed in consultation with experts in aging to ensure it meets the needs of older adults and those who support them. Lyft is also collaborating with community-based organizations—including AltaMed, Urban League, NOAH, SAGE and Self Help for the Elderly—to offer early access and discounted rides for qualifying seniors.

To activate Lyft Silver, users can open the Lyft app, tap the “You” icon in the bottom right corner, and select “Lyft Silver” to enable the feature. The interface will immediately switch to a more senior-friendly version.

Friends and family can also use this link to invite a loved one to try Lyft Silver, including the option to pre-load their account with Lyft Cash to cover ride costs. Alternatively, open the Lyft app, tap the “You” icon in the bottom right corner, and choose “Lyft Silver” to send an invitation to your loved one. They’ll get a text message with a link to activate Lyft Silver and accept your gift directly within their app. If they’re new to Lyft, the link will first guide them to download the app before prompting them to enable Lyft Silver.

Lyft Silver aims to make everyday outings—from doctor appointments to social visits—safer, easier, and more dignified for older adults who are ready to embrace a new form of independence.

“This is a deeply personal endeavor for us, driven by the desire to connect people with what truly matters,” the company added. “We can’t wait for you to experience the difference.”
