The hits keep on coming for travelers at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport.
Recent visitors to the busy New York City hub are now being warned about potential exposure to measles this week.
Newark (EWR) has been experiencing consistent flight disruptions going back to last month amid ongoing air traffic control equipment failures.
In a Thursday news release, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) identified the infected individual as a non-New Jersey resident who traveled through the airport's Terminal B on Monday, May 12, between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. local time.
"Potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as June 2, 2025," officials said. "As of the time of this release on May 15, no additional associated cases in New Jersey have been identified."
Officials remind travelers that the warning only impacts those who were in Terminal B during those 3.5 hours on Monday. What's more, individuals who have been vaccinated or have had measles in the past are unlikely to be affected.
According to NJDOH, measles symptoms include "a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin."
"The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet."
"Anyone who suspects an exposure or illness is urged to call a health care provider BEFORE going to a medical office or emergency department," NJDOH added. "Special arrangements can be made for evaluation while also protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infection. Please do not visit a medical facility without calling ahead."
