Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has announced the acquisition of the Mitchell KOA Journey by Shay Gregorie, an experienced KOA campground owner.
Gregorie, who also operates the award-winning Mount Pleasant/Charleston KOA Holiday in South Carolina, plans to enhance guest amenities and strengthen ties with the local community.
Located near South Dakota’s Corn Palace and Lake Mitchell, the Mitchell KOA Journey serves as a stop for travelers along Interstate 90. The campground is known for its accessibility and welcoming atmosphere, attracting visitors looking to explore the region’s attractions.
“Mitchell is a fantastic community with a lot of history and outdoor attractions that make it a great stop for campers,” Shay Gregorie, campground owner, said. “We see many opportunities to enhance the guest experience and contribute to the local economy by attracting more visitors to the area.”
Campgrounds play an important role in local economies, with KOA’s annual Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report indicating that campers spend an average of $156 per day while traveling. Thirty percent of campers express interest in visiting small towns, and another 30% are drawn to food tourism, reflecting the growing demand for unique regional experiences.
KOA Journey campgrounds are designed for convenience, offering long pull-thru RV sites, well-lit after-hours check-in, and essential supplies for travelers. Positioned along major highways, these locations cater to road-weary guests seeking a hassle-free overnight stay.
At Mitchell KOA Journey, visitors will find a range of amenities, including a heated swimming pool, a dog park, a playground, and a fully stocked camp store. The campground also offers recreational facilities such as basketball courts, a community fire pit, and scenic walking trails.
Daily operations will be managed by General Managers Patricia and Brian Garvis, experienced hospitality professionals with a focus on guest services and campground operations.
A key initiative under Gregorie’s ownership is the expansion of pet-friendly offerings, including the addition of KOA Paw Pen Sites at select RV spots.
The Mitchell KOA Journey is one of more than 500 KOA campgrounds across the U.S. and Canada. Other KOA brands include KOA Holidays, which caters to campers seeking enhanced amenities, and KOA Resorts, which feature staff-led activities, on-site dining, and group accommodations.
The campground, located at 41255 South Dakota Highway 38 in Mitchell, South Dakota, will be open for the season from May 1 to November 2.
