3 weeks ago 6

Saint Martin has just marked a momentous milestone in the island nation’s history by officially joining the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) as an Associate Member. The move signifies more than just a change in status. It is a strong statement of the territory’s dedication to regional solidarity, collective growth and deeper collaboration with its Caribbean neighbors.

Becoming part of the OECS is a significant acknowledgment of the promise and resilience of Caribbean unity. For generations, these islands have been bound by a shared history—intertwined through culture, familial connections, migration and mutual aid. This move serves as a formal affirmation that their collective efforts will make Saint Martin and its regional allies stronger.

“As a proud advocate for fostering valuable and meaningful collaboration within the region, I believe wholeheartedly that we are our brother’s keeper,” confirmed Valérie Damaseau, Commissioner of Culture and Tourism of Saint Martin. “In times of need and challenge, it has always been the Caribbean community that responds first, stands firm, and lifts one another up. We are not only each other’s first responders—we are also each other’s greatest opportunity.”

This alliance with the OECS serves as a catalyst for progress, offering significant advantages for both Saint Martin and the broader Caribbean community. It opens doors to stronger economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and joint initiatives in such key sectors as trade, tourism, education, climate resilience and public health. Additionally, it creates new opportunities for enhanced connectivity by air and sea, fostering closer ties among Caribbean nations.

With this membership, Saint Martin strengthens its commitment to shaping a future where Caribbean nations lead in terms of sustainability, creativity and self-reliance. As the region advances, this partnership will serve as a testament to what can be achieved when Caribbean territories unite—not only in shared vision but through purposeful action.

“Our culture, our bloodline, and our uniqueness are not only reasons to celebrate who we are—they are proof that the Caribbean is a force to be reckoned with,” continued Damaseau. “This is not the end goal; this is the beginning of deeper collaboration, broader impact, and a shared vision that transcends our individual shores.”

Saint Martin announced that it is eager to play an active role within the OECS, working toward a future where Caribbean unity is both acknowledged and celebrated. It looks forward to joining its neighbors in breaking boundaries and forging a legacy of strength, resilience and limitless potential.
