Northern Ireland Glamping and Hospitality Businesses Take Steps Toward Sustainable Tourism

1 week ago 2

Businesses in Newry, Kilkeel, and Castlewellan have completed Tourism Northern Ireland’s Sustainable Tourism Business Programme, an initiative aimed at integrating sustainable practices within the industry.

Among the 15 businesses recognized for their participation were Willowtree Glamping in Newry, the Green Holiday Cottages in Kilkeel, and Hillyard House Hotel in Castlewellan.

The 12-week program, delivered by The Tourism Space, provided businesses with tools and guidance to implement sustainability measures that enhance operations, accessibility, and visitor engagement.

Participants took part in group sessions, online workshops, a field trip, and one-on-one mentoring, culminating in the development of a comprehensive Sustainability Action Plan.

These action plans serve as roadmaps for long-term sustainability efforts and contribute toward a Level 4 Certificate of Achievement in Sustainable Tourism Practice in Destinations from Ulster University.

At the program’s conclusion, participants convened at Magheramorne Estate in Larne to present their sustainability strategies, discuss key takeaways, and outline their next steps.

The initiative not only fosters individual business improvements but also strengthens collaboration within the industry, encouraging the adoption of best practices across the region.

Jessica Hoyle, experience brand development manager at Tourism NI, emphasized the importance of sustainable development in the sector.

“The purpose of the programme is to empower businesses to identify positive and realistic changes to become more accessible and sustainable, which is so important for the longevity of our industry and the businesses within it,” she said in a report published by the Newry Reporter.

Tina O’Dwyer, CEO of The Tourism Space, highlighted the collective efforts of the participants.

“One of the best parts of this programme has been seeing the businesses come together to share ideas and support each other. They’re not just working on their own sustainability goals, they are building a strong network which will help drive change across the tourism industry in Northern Ireland,” she said.

For businesses in the outdoor hospitality sector, programs like this offer valuable insights into practical sustainability applications, demonstrating how responsible practices can enhance guest experiences and long-term profitability.

By embedding sustainability into operations, businesses can improve efficiency, attract eco-conscious travelers, and contribute to the broader efforts of making tourism in Northern Ireland more resilient and forward-thinking.
