The upcoming National Tourism Awards for Wales will highlight excellence in the country’s tourism sector, a key economic driver employing nearly 12% of the Welsh workforce and contributing £3.8 billion annually.

Among the finalists are businesses in the outdoor hospitality industry, including Gwynedd’s Hafan y Môr Holiday Park and Llangollen’s adventure company, The Bearded Men.

Hafan y Môr, a 500-acre coastal holiday park owned by Haven, has been shortlisted for the Bro a Byd Environmental Sustainability award and Best Self-Catering category.

The park, known for its sustainability initiatives, has made significant investments in renewable energy, electric vehicle infrastructure, and wildlife conservation.

“We’re absolutely delighted. We’ve worked very hard over the last three years and Haven have put a lot of investment in,” said general manager Denise Bossons.

She highlighted the park’s extensive solar panel installations, electric fleet, and conservation efforts, including reptile fencing and a bat hotel.

The recognition underscores the increasing importance of environmental sustainability in the outdoor hospitality industry.

As guest expectations evolve, businesses investing in green infrastructure may not only improve their operational efficiency but also enhance their brand reputation.

Hafan y Môr’s approach illustrates how parks can align with sustainability trends while maintaining high-capacity operations, accommodating up to 5,000 guests at a time.

Llangollen-based adventure company The Bearded Men is also vying for top honors in the Best Activity and Rising Star categories.

The company, which employs up to 30 staff, has expanded its offerings and recently acquired a hotel in Llangollen. Co-founder Jason Rickwood emphasized their commitment to local partnerships and international tourism growth.

“We get people from all over the country coming here and increasingly from the USA and Canada thanks to the Ryan Reynolds factor at Wrexham Football Club,” he said.

For outdoor hospitality businesses, the event offers a broader perspective on industry trends, from accessibility and inclusivity to sustainable tourism.

In a report by North Wales Live, Jim Jones, CEO of North Wales Tourism, noted, “The sheer volume and quality of entries this year has underlined why Wales is a truly world-class destination.”

With categories spanning accommodations, attractions, and sustainability, the awards serve as a benchmark for businesses looking to enhance their offerings and gain industry recognition.

The awards ceremony, the first in six years, will take place on March 27 at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. The event, organized by North Wales Tourism, is open to industry professionals, providing an opportunity for networking and celebrating excellence in Welsh tourism.
