Benidorm Advances Sustainable Tourism with New Camping & Adventure Park

Benidorm City Council has awarded a contract for the development of a new camping and multi-adventure area in Séquia Mare Park, a project designed to enhance outdoor recreation and tourism sustainability in the region.

The contract, valued at €710,253.06, was granted to Mediterráneo de Obras y Asfaltos SA, with a six-month timeline for completion, as per a press release

The initiative is part of the 2023 Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan, under the ‘Verde Benidorm’ framework, funded through the European Union’s Next GenerationEU program.

The project aims to establish a camping facility and adventure area adjacent to the park’s youth hostel and interpretation center, reinforcing Benidorm’s commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and outdoor leisure

Mayor Toni Pérez emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “We are highlighting historical elements of the city at a point where there are still vestiges of the Séquia Mare, which was part of the old Polop Major Irrigation system.”

He further noted that the development aligns with efforts to rehabilitate and enhance public assets for both residents and visitors.

From an industry perspective, the project presents an opportunity for outdoor hospitality businesses in the region.

With increasing demand for sustainable tourism experiences, this initiative could drive foot traffic to local accommodations, tour operators, and outdoor activity providers.

The incorporation of a multi-adventure zone alongside the camping area may appeal to a broader demographic, potentially boosting the region’s appeal to nature-focused travelers and youth groups.

The new facilities will integrate seamlessly into the park’s existing landscape. The design preserves current paths and terraces, while key amenities such as restrooms, changing rooms, and a central kitchen will be strategically placed near the hostel.

Pérez confirmed that “there will be direct communication between the multi-adventure area and the camping area, but without both uses interfering with each other.”

By enhancing Benidorm’s outdoor tourism offerings, this project positions the city as a destination for eco-conscious visitors and adventure-seekers. As sustainability becomes an increasingly central focus in the outdoor hospitality sector, similar initiatives may serve as models for other municipalities looking to expand their nature-based tourism infrastructure.
